“Costas Colectivo, previously known as Salsa del Norte, is a Salsa & Latin Variety band with local bands in both Chicago, IL and Washington, DC. It was founded in August 2016 in DeKalb, Illinois by Michael McSweeney, at the time a Northern Illinois University by a group of graduate students with backgrounds in Afro-Cuban music and jazz. With its core trio of management including DC-based timbalero Michael McSweeney, Chicago-based bassist Jorge Brito, and SoCal-based vocalist Braden Astorga-Rollins, the band is most commonly seen in its signature 6-piece form including lead vocals, trombone, piano, bass, and two percussionists. Marcel Penzes leads his Marcel 6 for the first time, at the nation’s capital’s premier Jazz & Supper Club, the historic Blues Alley! This will be the first time Blues Alley will host a Mardi Gras concert ON fat tuesday in over 20 years!

Marcel Penzes presents the soulful and boisterous sounds of New Orleans Jazz music in a one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras experience! Penzes and his band bring the energy of the Crescent City with their combination of sweet melodies from the French Quarter’s clubs and the liveliness of brass bands on Bourbon Street. Attendees can expect to tap their feet, dance, and celebrate with a second line parade! Don't miss this lively and exciting performance, doing Mardi Gras in true N’awlins fashion! “The Peabody Promenaders bring the Charm City Traditional Jazz Sound celebrating Eubie Blake, Chick Webb, Calloway and more!

When the Peabody Promenaders perform for the Potomac River Jazz Club, be prepared for a blend of popular traditional melodies and some brand-new, early-days’ style traditional jazz music. Led by masters level trombonist and composer Marcel Penzes, one of the hottest new players on the local scene, the band features students of America’s oldest music academy, Baltimore’s Peabody Conservatory.

The PRJC audience can expect to hear a lineup that includes both known and forgotten jazz from turn-of-the-last-century Baltimore composers. Think of it as a pre-Thanksgiving musical treat. November 16, 1:30pm (PRJC’ s Winter start time) at Rosensteel Hall in Silver Spring

The Potomac River Jazz Club (PRJC) has been bringing Traditional Jazz to the DC area for 54 years. Celebrating jazz as it was originally intended—a joyful, collective expression of life—Penzes performs music from the songbooks of Louis Armstrong, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and more. A familiar presence at local festivals like DC Jazz Fest and the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, Marcel has also taken the stage at the Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, and other iconic venues. He holds degrees in jazz studies from Johns Hopkins’ Peabody Conservatory and Indiana University.

“With her new project, ‘New Anthropology,’ Gabby Cameron debuts a collection of original compositions and creatively arranged covers, featuring collaborations with musicians from around the world. An ethnomusicologist, she is redefining the role of music scholars by using performance as a tool for engagement and connection across cultures. “

Trombonist and composer Marcel Penzes, joined by an all-star lineup of DMV musicians, showcases the diverse and infectious rhythms of Pan-America. Spanning salsa, cha-chá, bolero, and more, this high-energy performance takes audiences from the 1950s mambo scene at New York City’s Palladium to a Cuban jam session, or descargo, in Havana.

In the early 20th century, the musical and cultural exchange between Caribbean nations and New Orleans played a key role in the birth of jazz. In this workshop, trombonist Marcel Penzes explores jazz history, exploring questions like: Where did Louis Armstrong find inspiration for his distinct trumpet style? What is the “Spanish tinge”? And why are Havana and New Orleans more alike than we might think?

Traditional jazz at it’s finest this side of the Mississippi, the Conservatory Classic Jazz Band has been performing authentic, traditional, New Orleans Jazz for more than 2 decades in the D.C. area.

A homecoming like no other, Marcel Penzes began his musical career by “sitting in” with this ensemble, learning from masters of New Orleans music every month, where the classroom and the stage became one in the same! Now, Penzes returns as a member of the ensemble as a “grown up musician” (…if there is such a thing!), ready to reunite with his mentors in a performance like no other!
